CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BLUES ARE COOKING - CARLTON MEMBERSHIP SLOGAN 2010

The 2010 Carlton Membership slogan was revealed today and once again it promises to be a
talking
point and create controversy.
CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BLUES ARE COOKING
For 2010 we wanted another slogan that would make people take notice, we wanted something
different
that hadn't been done before.
Adding the magpie and bomber in the cup adds a little extra spice to the slogan. Let's
hope it gets
people talking and more importantly reminds Carlton supporters to join as members in 2010,
which is
exactly what you can do now.
Carlton has revealed the 2010 Membership slogan and once again it promises to be a talking point and create controversy.
“CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BLUES ARE COOKING”
The line itself is sure to have people talking and the artwork will only add to the discussions, particularly among supporters of other teams.
Let the fun begin! The release of the 2010 Carlton Membership slogan and illustration is sure to have people talking. It is different, something that has not been seen in the AFL before and importantly it is a bit of fun.
The slogan was released today to coincide with 2010 Membership being on sale online at carltonfc.com.au. Renewal packs will be forwarded to 2009 Members next week but you can renew your membership online now. And remember 20 lucky members who join or renew before December 11 will have their 2010 Carlton Membership personally presented to them by a player at Visy Park.
As of Monday all players will be back at training preparing for 2010. This week more players returned from their leave and on Monday the final seven players will commence their official pre-season training. Official because all have been in training and some have been at Visy Park already. The majority of training next week will be various fitness sessions, many of which will be held away from Visy Park and the skill sessions will be very brief. Details on open training sessions between now and Christmas will be posted on the Carlton website.
Carlton ambassador Steve Hooker has been short-listed with four other athletes, including Usain Bolt, to be named male world track and field athlete of the year. He is also in the running to win the Sports Performer of the Year Award in Australia. Unlike the athlete of the year, the Sports Performer of the Year Award is a public vote so this is our chance to support a true Carlton person and vote for Steve. He certainly deserves to win the Award; the 2008 Olympic pole vault champion added the 2009 World Championship to his list of achievements during the year. It was the manner in which he won the event that will be remembered for a long time, he injured his adductor in training just prior to the world championships and went against advice not to compete and won the gold medal in truly inspirational circumstances.
We urge all Carlton supporters to vote for Steve Hooker as the Sports Performer of the Year. Each voter also receives an entry into the draw to win $5,000.
The artwork is an illustration depicting Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and Kreuzer around a premiership cup that is being used as a ‘cooking pot’. A magpie and a bomber can be seen inside the ‘cooking pot’ that is surrounded by flames. The backdrop of the illustration is the MCG.
CEO Greg Swann said the slogan and artwork were designed to make people take notice.
“The 2009 slogan, “They Know We’re Coming” was a little controversial and it not only got people talking it was a very successful campaign. It generated a great deal of media attention and was a real talking point in what was a record-breaking membership year for the Club.
“For 2010 we wanted another slogan that would make people take notice, we wanted something different that hadn’t been done before,” Swann said.
For the first time in the Club’s history membership was over 43,000 in 2009. The controversial slogan did set the Blues up for criticism during the season, particularly after losses. Opposition clubs also used it in a sarcastic manner on many occasions. However as Swann said it was a membership slogan for Carlton supporters, not a Club or team theme for the year.
“In the end the team really lived up to the membership slogan last year as we continued our improvement and played our first final in eight years. With an exciting young list and the experience of a final we believe people not only know we are coming but are now well aware of what we are preparing.
“Importantly it is a membership slogan, it is for Carlton supporters and is designed to grab attention. Like last year when we said we were coming we didn’t say we were there, this new slogan says we are preparing the main meal; it is up to us as to how long the preparation will be,” Swann said.
Continuing the cooking theme, of which there has been so many successful television shows, Swann said it was fair to compare 2009 as the entrée; “we made the finals” and 2010 as the start of the process of “preparing the main meal”.
“Adding the magpie and bomber in the cup adds a little extra spice to the slogan. Let’s hope it gets people talking and more importantly reminds Carlton supporters to join as members in 2010,” Swann added.
